Toronto Aeros 2nd annual Black-and-White Exhibition Game

Tuesday April 15 2008
Aeros Black 6 at Aeros White 2

Aeros Black team bleaches the Whites 6-2
The Aeros girls playing for the Black team take home bragging rights until next year’s game for their 6-2 win over the White team. However, the post-game pizza was awarded equally to both teams. See you next year!

Saturday April 12 2008, Quarter-final
Etobicoke Dolphins 4 at Toronto Midget Aeros 1

Dolphins evade Aeros nets, slipping by into semis
The Aeros don’t like to lose, and especially don’t like to lose to this Etobicoke team. But it seems that the hockey gods, for the second time in two weeks, decided to mete out some ironic justice for the Aeros team, and the Dolphins played a strong game to best the Aeros and advance to play another day.

The gameplan for the Aeros seemed on track when, at the 5:48 mark, Aurora Kennedy (9) potted a power play goal from Sally Butler (10) and Ali Winkle (3). Then, the wheels fell off for the following two minutes. The Dolphins scored at 5:17, 5:00 and 3:48 to bury the Aeros deep in a hole with only two short periods remaining. To give credit to the Aeros girls, they might have become frustrated and taken a lot of penalties, or given up and packed it in for the game. But they knew they still had a chance, and played on. Toronto played well in the second period, and became stronger through the third. They had some chances including a few posts and cross-bar near-misses, and Etobicoke got a bit scrambly, but held on fast. With the Aeros netminder out, the Dolphins scored the empty-netter to end the Aeros chances of a provincial medal for this year and put the cap on the Aeros 2007-08 season.

Congratulations to Sudbury for their provincial gold medal, Ottawa for Silver and the afore-mentioned Dolphins for the Bronze medal. Thanks to coaches Ralph Aiello, Lou Vedovat and Robyn Sharpe, who are following the lure of the big show and moving to the Toronto Aeros Junior team next year, for a great season. Thanks also to our parent volunteers who put in many dedicated hours to ensure the Aeros ship flies without faltering.

Good luck to our seniors Dania Simmonds (24), heading to Union College next year, Olivia Damiani (20), who plans to head to McGill, Alex McPhail (21), going to Elmira College and Emily Ablamowicz (29) who is hoping to be at Dalhousie next year.

And thanks to all of the Aeros girls for a fun year.

Saturday April 11 2008, 2nd elimination round
Toronto Midget Aeros 1 at Nepean Wildcats 0

Toronto squeaks by Nepean in OT
Nepean is a highly-touted team that seems to have all the pieces for a championship team but never quite gets the breaks to get there. The Aeros faced them at the Ontario Winter Games, just squeaking out a 1-1 tie in the last minute of play. This game was destined to be a defensive battle again, with the Aeros getting the break in OT to advance to the quarter final.

Through three periods the girls moved the puck out of their own end, only to be stopped cold by their opposition’s aggressive forecheck, solid defensive play or cool-and-collected goaltending. Tension mounted until the middle of the third period, when fans on both sides sensed that the next goal would win. Regulation time still offers a hope of comeback from that next goal though, and when the buzzer sounded at the end of the game the fans hearts stopped thumping and fell into their stomachs.

The overtime started with a quick scoring chance by Nepean. A minute into the OT, Alex McPhail (21) picked the puck up and started up ice, feeding it along the boards to Ali Winkel (3). Winkel cut over the blue line as Daniela Dal Colle (14) sped towards the net. This writer had to close his eyes with the tension, so I’m not sure exactly what happened, except that Dal Colle putt he puck past the Nepean netminder to win the game for the Aeros.

Congratulations to Nepean on a strong game and for being a great competitor a couple of times this season. The Aeros now move on to face the Etobicoke Dolphins in the quarter-final.

Saturday April 12 2008, 1st elimination round
Sault Ste. Marie Wildcats 0 at Toronto Midget Aeros 7

Aeros open scoring floodgates and drown Wildcats
Toronto was wondering which Sault Ste. Marie Wildcats team would appear at this game - the one that was soundly thrashed by Kingston yesterday morning, or the team that then rebounded to best the Etobicoke Dolphins in the afternoon. For their part, the Aeros were hoping to carry yesterday’s 3rd period momentum into this game and hopefully throughout the rest of the tournament.

The two teams felt each other out for the first 3 minutes of the opening period, and after that the Aeros took control of the game. Two goals potted within 15 seconds of each other at the 3-minute mark gave the Aeros the cushion they needed to relax and play their well-rehearsed game. The Aeros had time in this game to make their passes and plays, as Sault Ste. Marie was just not up to speed throughout the contest. One second period goal and four third period goals completed the rout. Danielle Bailey (30) received credit for the shutout.

Aeros scoring:
1st period: 3:53 Madison Johnston (16) from Shannon Doyle (7) and Ali Winkel(3)
1st period: 3:41 Alex McPhail (21) from Aurora Kennedy (9)
2nd period: 1:16 Sally Butler (10)
3rd period: 7:14 Ali Winkel (3) from Sally Butler (10) and Adriana Leon (19)
3rd period: 5:05 Dania Simmonds (24) from Sally Butler (10) and Ali Winkel (3)
3rd period: 0:24 Daniela Dal Colle (14) from Carolyn Luczak (26) and Olivia Damiani (20)
3rd period: 0:10 Sally Butler (10) from Adriana Leon (19) and Ellen Brandt (2)

Toronto now advances to play another set of Wildcats, from Nepean, in the afternoon elimination round. The last game between Nepean and Toronto saw Toronto tying the game at 1-1 in the dying minutes of the third period, so the contest is expected to be very close. The team that conserved their energy best during the layoff today will likely have the advantage entering the game.

Friday April 11 2008, Round Robin game 2
Toronto Midget Aeros 1 at Peterborough Ice Kats 1

Another pair of aces on the board as Aeros offense sputters
Toronto had not met the Peterborough Ice Kats this year but were expecting the trademark hard-working, gritty, and physical teams that seem to hail from out east. This proved to be the case as Peterborough showed up to play. The Ice Kats came on strong, causing some frustration in the Aeros’ ranks and forcing three penalties in the initial period. The Aeros, however, tallied the first score when Dania Simmonds (24) slid a pass to Kalley Armstrong (27), who blasted a shot at the net. Adriana Leon (19) deftly allowed the puck to deflect off her pants and into the net to give the Aeros the initial lead. A minute later Peterborough was coming back strong on a near break-away, requiring a haul-down by an Aeros defender. The Toronto PK was equal to the task until the dying seconds of the period. The Kats’ Kelly Toms dug out a semi-covered puck from the Aeros netminder, and fed it to Kali Graham who popped it in an open corner to tie the game 30 seconds before the period ended.

The Aeros kept their positive attitutude and their composure in the second period and started skating harder and better as a team. This continued through the second period, and although they could not capitalize on their chances, they gained more and more confidence and saw Peterborough spending more time in their own end. This continued into the third, and by the last part of the third period the game was almost being held in the Ice Kats’ end of the ice. The buzzer sounded with the score still at 1-1, but the Aeros left the ice knowing that they were perhaps finding their tournament form.

With two 1-1 games to their credit, the Aeros now wait for the score in the Peterborough - Stratford game later this evening to decided their placing in pool C for their game tomorrow.

Friday April 11 2008, Round Robin game #1
Stratford Aces 1 at Toronto Midget Aeros 1

Aces and Aeros end in aces
At this point in the year, the coaches have done all they can and it’s up to the girls to play their game in search of Provincial gold. With the short periods held at the final OWHA weekend, matches can be won or lost by any team and the Aeros knew they would be in tough against able competitors Stratford and Peterborough in Pool C. The Aeros opened against the Stratford Aces on Friday morning.

The Aces started pressing the Aeros right from the opening face-off. They put pressure on the Aeros defense, forcing them into the corners and foiling break-out plays. In their own end, Stratford stepped up quickly to box out Aeros forwards, keeping them outside and not allowing any passes through the middle of the ice. Toronto, on the other hand, looked tentative and sluggish. In the short games, the first goal is all-important, and Stratford potted it with 4 minutes left in the first period.

The teams settled into routine play in the second, with Toronto slowly gathering their legs under them but continuing to play more as individuals than as a team. The Aeros couldn’t take advantage of two power plays in the second period as they were passing the puck around but neglecting to shoot a lot. The Aeros were finally up to speed in the third, and Kalley Armstrong evened the score mid-period. Armstrong picked up the puck at the left circle in the Stratford end, driving towards the net, using her long reach and deft puck-control skills to walk through two Aces. Just as Aeros fans were about to yell “shoot!”, Armstrong pulled the puck back towards her, evading yet another defender, and all in the same motion shifted it left-and-under the pads of the Aces’ goalie to even the score - a highlight reel puck-handling effort. A power play for each team as the clock wound down gave neither team an advantage, and the tie held to the end.

The Aeros next play Peterborough, at 2:45 pm in the Friday afternoon game.

LLFHL Championship Weekend
4-6 April 2008

Sunday, April 6 2008, LLFHL final
Durham West Lightning 3 at Toronto Midget Aeros 1

The hockey gods favour Durham today in another great contest
The last game between these two teams was a 6-period marathon that featured some of the best women’s hockey this writer has seen in awhile. In that game, the Aeros lost to Durham 1-0 in the dying minutes of a 3rd overtime period, so the Aeros were hoping to avenge that loss with a win today.

As expected, both teams came out flying and evenly matched. The first period featured back-and forth action, strong goaltending, great puck-handling and tense moments for both teams. But the evenness of the teams was reflected in the 0-0 score at the end of the period.

In accordance with the every-second period flood schedule, the ice was flooded during the 1st period intermission. Twenty seconds after the puck was dropped to start the second period, an Aeros defender was crossing in front of her own net with control of the puck and a Durham forward in chase. The hockey gods decided to play a trick on the Aeros, and the puck hit a water puddle in the ice and stuck there in front of the net causing the Aeros player to lose it at that inopportune location. Durham’s Darija Davisdson and Brittney Sullivan made the most of their opportunity as they immediately whacked the lame-duck puck home past a surprised Aeros netminder to open the scoring 1-0. Even knowing that scoring on the Durham team was tough, the Aeros never gave up. At the 7 minute mark, Aurora Kennedy (9) fed a pass from her end to Adriana Leon (19), who slipped it to Kalley Armstrong (27) for the tying goal Both teams did not relax and the action continued in both ends. With just under 3 minutes to go in the period, a Durham forward gave an all-out effort to strip an Aeros player of the puck and broke free of the defense for a break-away. A nice shot evaded the Aeros netminder and put Durham up by 2-1 in a potentially momentum-shifting goal at the end of the 2nd period.

The Durham squad could smell a win but the Toronto girls were just as determined to even the score. Toronto opened their offense full blast and took the play to Durham in the third period, but Durham played an intelligent defensive period and managed to clear the puck out of their end and get fresh troops on the ice when needed. As the clock ticked down close to the one-minute mark, Toronto pulled their netminder and threw the extra attacker on the ice, upping the pressure even more A few seconds later, Aeros fans erupted in joy as the puck rocketed past the Durham goalie for the tying goal. But wait the referee signaled that an Aero in the crease negated the goal Aeros players, coaches and fans protested that the player had been pushed into the crease, but the referee conferred with her linespersons and held fast to her judgement: tying goal called off. After the ensuing face-off Durham, having dodged one bullet, made sure they didn’t have to dodge another and forced the empty-net goal at the 50 second mark to secure their 3-1 win.

Congratulations to Richard Sabourin’s Durham Lightning for their LLFHL championship win, and to the Toronto Aeros for the Silver. And thanks to the LLFHL transition committee for the great year of league hockey under sometimes turbulent circumstances. As to the hockey gods, well, we hope you will smile more favourably on the Aeros in the OWHA Provincial Championships next weekend.

Saturday April 5 2008, LLFHL semi-final
Waterloo Ravens 0 at Toronto Midget Aeros 1

Toronto wins another date with Durham in finals with early 1st period goal
Waterloo is a hard-working bunch that grabs games with sheer determination and hustle in the tough neighborhoods in corners and behind the net, so Toronto was expecting the hard-fought close game that did materialize.

In almost a mirror image of the Cambridge game, the Aeros again scored only thirty seconds into the game. The puck bounced around a bit after the opening face-off, then attached itself to Adriana Leon’s (19) stick. Leon quickly shifted from 1st through 2nd and 3rd gears, hitting her trademark rocket speed and shifting into 4th as she approached the net. Protecting the puck with her body, she jetted her way to the front of the net and fired, beating the Ravens’ netminder on the first shot of the game.

And that was it for scoring. Toronto took two minors and a 4:00 minute penalty in the second period, but the Ravens were unable to capitalize on the power play. The teams matched offense with defense, grinding it out in both ends, but held each other off throughout essentially three periods, with the Aeros taking the game on the early goal.

The Aeros now meet Durham West in the LLFHL championship in a re-match of their Ontario Winter Games semi-final marathon. Hold onto your hats folks, it should be a great game.

Friday April 4 2008, LLFHL quarter-final
Cambridge Roadrunners 0 at Toronto Midget Aeros 2

Aeros beep-beep past Roadrunners to move into semis
Toronto came on strong early in this game and then Cambridge woke up to even out the play, but the early Toronto lead held up through the latter two periods. The Aeros put Cambridge under pressure from the opening whistle. Only 3:20 into the game, Daniela Dal Colle (14) beat the Roadrunners’ net minder on a pass from Alex McPhail (21) to grab the very early lead. Two minutes later, with the Roadrunners still thinking about the previous goal, Aurora Kennedy (9) fired a shot from the point that evaded all legs and arms and other flotsam and jetsam, and it slid by the screened netminder to put the Aeros up 2-0. Assisting on the goal were Olivia Damiani (20) and Ali Winkel (3). After that goal, Cambridge woke up a bit and played with more determination, keeping the Aeros to the outside in their own zone, and pressing in the Aeros zone, but the first period still ended up at 2-0.

In the second period, the Roadrunners turned up their offense, putting pressure on the Aeros defensive squad. The defenders took three penalties, and playing shorthanded for 6 minutes tends to hamper your game a bit. But the Aeros penalty-kill and the able goaltending of Emily Ablamowitcz (29) were up to the task, holding the Roadrunners off despite a few wild scrambles in front of the net.

Toronto was better at staying out of the penalty box in the third. The Roadrunners kept on coming, but were unable to get through to the net and the buzzer sounded with the Aeros earning the 2-0 shutout victory.

Next action is Saturday against hard-working Waterloo.

LLFHL Championship Qualifying Best-of-Three Series
vs Brampton Canadettes - 16, 25, 29 March 2008

• • • • • •

Saturday, March 29 2008, LLFHL qualifier
Brampton Canadettes 1 at Toronto Midget Aeros 2

Toronto advances to fight for first LLFHL League Championship
The Toronto Aeros advanced to the LLFHL Championship weekend by defeating the Brampton Canadettes 2 to 1 on Saturday night at Seneca College. The Aeros won the 3 game series that went the distance and provided fans with some of the most exciting hockey witnessed this year. The series could easily have gone either way as the statistics prove. In three games played the two teams scored a total of 3 goals each. Both teams combined great goaltending with very tight defensive styles that limited the offences to very few quality scoring chances. In the third and deciding game the Aeros took a one goal lead early in the second period when Daniela Dalcolle (14), perched on the top edge of the crease, banged in a goalmouth pass from Kalley Armstrong (27). Brampton evened the score later in the second period. The Aeros responded quickly by hitting the crossbar on a shot that cleanly beat the Brampton Goaltender. With the score tied and players heading on to the ice to start the third period a sense of urgency was evident to both clubs. Neither the Aeros nor the Canadettes were willing to give up on the strategy that has worked so well and has carried both teams so far this season.

“The Brampton defence corps challenges the opposing team at their own blue line better than any team I’ve seen this year and it makes it very hard for the offence to penetrate the zone and create an opportunity, especially on smaller ice. The Aeros on the other hand are a high energy puck control team who try to use their speed and force their opponents into mistakes that they can capitalize on. These two teams are playing some good hockey out there.” were the intermission words of an unidentified spectator who was in attendance.

The Aeros finally took the lead halfway thru the third when Kalley Armstrong (27) put one in on a deke to the forehand after gathering a loose puck inside the Brampton blue line. The Aeros were by no means out of the woods after Brampton pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker with just under 2 minutes to go forcing Emily Ablamowitz (29) into a game saving stop. A couple of timeouts, critical face offs in the Aeros zone, and goalmouth scrambles later, the final buzzer signaled the Aeros victory.

The Aeros advance to the LLFHL final weekend to both defend last years NMGHL Championship, and to battle for the first LLFHL Midget AA Championship.

Tuesday, March 25 2008, LLFHL qualifier
Toronto Aeros 0 at Brampton Canadettes 2

Brampton shuts out Aeros this time to even series at 1-apiece
Brampton showed up in this game with more energy and sporting even more confidence and enthusiasm than usual from success at their own weekend tournament this past weekend. The Toronto Aeros, on the other hand, seemed tired and blasé in this game, and were no match for the Canadettes.

Brampton scored 3-1/2 minutes into the game to put the Aeros on notice, and then the game settled into the normal Aeros-Canadettes routine of back-and-forth play, battles along the boards, and tangles in front of both netminders. The score held through the middle period and, as the Aeros wound up for a big finish in the third period, Brampton dampened their resolve by popping in an insurance goal 4 minutes in. After that, the Aeros had to skate a lot in each possession as Brampton played a smart and safe dump-it-out game, smothering any chances of an Aeros comeback.

The third and deciding game of the series takes place on Saturday March 29th at Seneca College.

Sunday, March 16 2008, LLFHL qualifier
Brampton Canadettes 0 at Toronto Aeros 1

Toronto shuts out Brampton and takes first game of LLFHL playoffs round #2
Earlier this year, the Brampton Canadettes handed the Toronto Aeros their only non-win in LLFHL league play on a strong work ethic and tough-as-nails approach to their game. The Canadettes go into every corner determined to come out with the puck, enter every offensive zone determined to out-race their opposition, and play a gritty defensive style around their own net to keep forwards away from their net. This game was no exception, as the Canadettes matched and sometimes out-battled the Aeros in this low-scoring affair.

The only goal of the game was scored with 18 seconds on the clock by Daniela Dal Colle (14), assisted by Sally Butler (10) and Aurora Kennedy (9). That lone goal lasted through the second period and stood tall as time wound down and Brampton pulled their netminder for the extra attacker. Goaler Emily Ablamowicz (29) and the Aeros defensive crew were rock-solid to stave off the attack and earn another shutout.

The Aeros and Canadettes meet in Brampton on Tuesday March 25th for the second game of the series.

Sunday, March 9 2008, Bronze Medal Game
Toronto Midget Aeros 1 at Barrie Sharks 0 (OT)

Sharks take them to OT but Aeros take home their first-ever OWG medal
The Aeros were scheduled to play the Barrie Sharks for Bronze only an hour after playing 6 periods of hockey in a losing effort. Thanks to the OWG organizers for negotiating an additional 45 minute delay between the games, and thanks as well to Barrie for being patient with the delay.

In four games this season, the Aeros had beaten the Barrie Sharks by a total score of 19-4 with one of those games being close. After their huge effort and then disappointment in the Durham semi-final, the Toronto girls (and maybe their fans) may have felt that Barrie should just hand over the bronze medal. But such was not to be the case as Barrie made the most of a tired Aeros squad to push this game to overtime.

For two periods the Aeros battled physical and mental fatigue and were hard-pressed to keep up with the determined Barrie squad, despite Barrie being a couple of players short. Barrie pressed in the Aeros end, as the Aeros made some defensive miscues, and the Sharks collapsed around their goalie if Toronto exhibited any inkling of offensive prowess. Barrie’s Chantal Rosewell (12) scored early in the second period to give the Sharks the 1-0 lead, and the Aeros frustration at their lack of ability to get anything started began to show as they took three penalties in the period. Aeros fans were also showing some frustration, perhaps not quite understanding the strain that their girls were under in this game.

Coach Ralph Aiello had a heart-to-heart with his troops in the second-period intermission; the girls dug deep and probably decided that they’d prefer the bronze medal to no medal after all, and Aeros fans decided to band together and cheer on their team as a group which for some reason is not usually done in Aerosland. It’s unclear if any of these things helped, but the girls came out in the third period with more energy than in the first two periods. An early power play gave them the opportunity they were looking for, and Adriana Leon (19) became the first hero of the day when she tipped in a point shot from Madison Johnston (16), assisted by Sally Butler (10). Both teams’ fans spent the rest of the period encouraging their favourites to take the lead to no avail, and the two sides entered the overtime knowing it was anyone’s game.

Except, that is, for Sally Butler (10), who became the Aeros’ second hero of the day as she potted the bronze-medal winner on a beautiful set-up by Kalley Armstrong (27) only 12 seconds into overtime.

Congratulations to the Aeros for their first-ever Ontario Winter Games medal. Thank-you to the Barrie Sharks for playing a sound hockey game, for being classy despite the defeat, and for placing 4th overall in the tournament.

Congratulations are also in order to the Markham-Stouffville Stars for taking home gold, and to Durham for their silver and for their great game in the semi-final. Most of all, thanks to the OWG Organizing committee. The hockey was great, the facilities were outstanding and the arrangements went off without a hitch despite the extra snow.

Sunday, March 9 2008, Semi Final
Toronto Midget Aeros 1 at Durham West Lightning 2 (3rd OT)

A Hockey Classic to be remembered
You had to be there. The true flavour of this extended battle between two hugely talented Midget teams cannot be adequately expressed in words. Both teams knew the others’ reputation. Both teams knew their competition would be the toughest they had faced all year. Both teams knew they had the talent to win. Both teams wanted the win, a lot, if not for the medal then just for the satisfaction of the win over the other. If either team was nervous, neither showed it. The play in this game was never tentative, it was all-out hockey. It was high speed never-give-up skating. It was crisp tape-to-tape passes on beautifully executed break-outs against aggressive fore-checking. It was great penalty-killing and well-executed power plays. The playmaking was highlight-reel exciting. The defensive plays were muscle-straining efforts to defend against fast, hockey-intelligent forwards. The goaltending in both ends was incredible. It was exhilarating and exhausting at the same time, even for those watching. It was hockey incarnate, and the participants will remember this game always.

Through one period, then another, and another, both teams put their best foot forward. If there were mistakes, no-one noticed. The game wasn’t penalty free, but penalties were only committed in the drive to overcome the other. And at the end of three periods, it was 0-0.

The tension in the crowd was high-voltage electric as overtime commenced. Once again, if either team was nervous they didn’t show it. If either team was tired after three intense periods, they found the energy somewhere. And both teams battled through one overtime period, then another, then into another. Just when it looked like a fourth overtime would be needed, Durham’s Margot Sharfe (9) fired a puck in the midst of battling an Aeros defender while racing up the left side, and saw it enter the Aeros net to end the game.

Disappointing for the Aeros? Unbelievably so. But as this is written many days later, it’s the playing of this game that will matter most in the years to come, not the outcome. All who played will take pride in knowing that they put all of their knowledge and all of their effort into this game, that both teams were equal to the task, and that this game may be one of the best games in which they ever played.

It was an honour to be a spectator.

Saturday, March 8 2008, Quarter Final
Stratford Aces 1 at Toronto Midget Aeros 3

Aeros beat a 14-Ace hand to advance to Semi-final
The Stratford Aces battled the Toronto Aeros to a 1-1 tie in the Solid Goal tournament earlier this year, so the Aeros knew their competition would be gunning for the win as much as themselves. The Aces were hampered by a short bench, with only 14 players, but their girls did not seem to tire, and put up a solid game for three periods.

The Aeros opened the scoring at 9:08 of the first period when Kalley Armstrong (27) lifted a perfect pass from Daniela Dal Colle (14) over the Aces’ goalie. That goal gave the Aeros a cushion of confidence to settle into their game, but also hardened Stratford’s determination. The lone goal held out until 6:36 of the second period, with the Aeros shorthanded. Thirty seconds into a strong penalty-kill effort, Kalley Armstrong (27) found the puck and head-manned it to Sally Butler (10), who turned on the jets and made a nice deke approaching the net, sliding the puck over the goal line on the ice for the eventual game winner. Daniela Dal Colle (14) made it 3-0 in the third period, as she parked herself in front and banged in a puck set up by Adriana Leon (19) and Sally Butler (10) to make it 3-0. Stratford did not roll over and fold their hand, and with Toronto on another PK the Aces gained some energy with a goal at the 3:16 mark. That fired up the Aces, and they piled on the pressure with the extra attacker. But, the Aeros held on to the tiger’s tail and earned the win on a solid team effort.

The Aeros now have to conquer one of the toughest competitors they have faced all season, Durham Lightning, in order to advance to the Gold Medal game on Sunday.

Saturday, March 8 2008, Round Robin Game 3
Nepean Wildcats 1 at Toronto Midget Aeros 1

Aeros pull out a tie in the last minute of a defensive battle
The Toronto Aeros and the Nepean Wildcats had not yet met this season, but the Wildcats came with a reputation as one of the top contenders in this tournament. That reputation was well-deserved, as the Wildcats played a tightly defensive game, stifling the Aeros offense throughout. A tight defensive formation protecting their goalie and a solid fore-check in the Aeros zone did not give Toronto many scoring opportunities and made it tough to break out of their own end. The Aeros played their usual solid defensive game as well, and although they controlled the puck for a lot of minutes in the Nepean end, the Wildcats did not make any defensive errors on which the Aeros could capitalize.

The teams battled through two periods with nothing to show for their efforts except sweaty hockey gear. In the third period, Nepean struck first 3 minutes into the period, then went into a more defensive posture. With time running out, and the Toronto netminder on the bench in favour of an extra attacker, the Aeros piled around the Wildcat’s net trying to force the puck through the maze of bodies. With thirty seconds on the clock, Paulena Jakarsezian (11) scooped in a Sally Butler (10) rebound to become an instant hero and tie the game. Olivia Damiani (20) also assisted on the play.

The Aeros finish second in Pool A and now face the third place team in Pool B, the Stratford Aces in the Quarter Finals this evening.

Friday, March 7 2008, Round Robin Game 2
Toronto Midget Aeros 1 at Markham-Stouffville Stars 0

Aeros post a one-goal winner on Bailey’s shut-out
The Aeros played a solid game in game 2, but were up against a strong competitor in the Markham-Stouffville Stars. The Stars finished second in their LLFHL division and their play in this game showed why, as they matched the Aeros in both offensive and defensive play. Aeros netminder Danielle Bailey (30) had to be sharp on more than a few occasions and played a strong game to earn the first shut-out of the tournament.

Ali Winkel (3) popped the only goal of the game from Olivia Damiani (20) and Clare Padmore (17) early in the second period. Winkel used her trademark speed to power in on net and fire a shot past the Stars goalie.

The third period started getting chippy as both teams fought for an advantage. The period turned into a penalty-fest with 8 penalties between the teams, but the Winkel goal held up and the Aeros earned the win.

Next action for the Aeros is at 9am Saturday against powerhouse Nepean.

Friday, March 7 2008, Round Robin Game 1
Waterloo Ravens 2 at Toronto Midget Aeros 2

Aeros work out opening game jitters
The Aeros and the Waterloo Ravens drew the opening game of the Ontario Winter Games women’s hockey tournament and, as is expected to be the case throughout the entire tournament, the game was a tough-fought, close affair. The Aeros looked a little over-anxious throughout much of the game as they worked out their opening game jitters, and seemed to have so much energy that their feet outran their heads and hands some of the time. However, overall the effort by the girls was commendable for their first effort of the tournament.

Waterloo opened the scoring mid-first period when they picked up a puck behind the Aeros net and fired it hard in front of the Aeros net. Ravens forward Lynsey Schill (14) was right there, and executed a beautiful re-direct that hit just inside the top left corner post, and dropped in over the goal line for the opening goal of the tournament.

The Aeros settled in for the second and owned the period. At the 7:19 mark, Sally Butler (10) picked up a pass from Olivia Damiani (20) and Shannon Doyle (7) and fired it home to tie the game at one each. Three minutes later, Adriana Leon (19) worked the puck to Ali Winkel (3) who flipped it to Butler. Butler worked her way in front and shot, only to have the puck deflected back to her.She shot again, but the puck did not make it to the net. But Butler found the puck again, took a few steps to her left and fired it over the Ravens’goalie to score on her third shot. Aeros up 2-1.

The Ravens evened the score at 2 a couple of minutes into the third period, and both teams settled into an even-handed game. Even pulling the Aeros’ goalie with 18 seconds left did not make a difference in the score as it ended at 2-2.

The Aeros next face the Markham-Stouffville Stars at 2pm this afternoon.

Aeros defeat defensive Dolphins
The Toronto Aeros shut out the Etobicoke Dolphins #28 by a score of 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Seneca College. This was the Aeros second qualifying game for the OWHA provincial championships to be held in April. The Aeros now have 2 wins with 3 games remaining in this qualifying process. The #28 Dolphins team, who have proven to be an always-tough competitor for the Aeros this year, were led by awesome goaltending from Laura Proietto (29), who made several TSN highlight-reel saves, and by tough defensive work in front of their own net.

This was perhaps one of the most exciting games of the year for the fans who were treated to a game that was important for both clubs in their quest for the OWHA Provincial Gold Medal. The Aeros’ Emily Ablamowitz (29) was again hugely responsible for this win. The Aeros outshot their opponents in this game and carried more of an advantage in scoring chances but Ablamowitz had to come up very big in backstopping her team to the shutout victory. Furious action and goal mouth scrambles were more to the liking of the Aeros who took advantage and scored two unanswered goals from in tight. Aeros head coach Ralph Aiello changed his lines seemingly twice as fast as his opponents and it clearly made the difference. In more than one instance in the second period with the benches on the far side, the Aeros had changed lines 3 times before Etobicoke could get to the bench for fresh legs. They continued to go to the net and fight for territory with more energy than their opponents and it paid off. Another one of those small details that make the Aeros tough to beat. Their work ethic and balanced line combinations continue to pay dividends for the Aeros who play qualifying game three on Tuesday night against the Leaside Wildcats.

Aeros close out their second consecutive undefeated regular season
“I can’t talk about it because I might jinx it” were the words of associate coach Robyn Sharpe in between a pair of games on the final weekend of the LLFHL regular season schedule. The Toronto Aeros won both games on the weekend against the Etobicoke Dolphins #34 team. In outscoring their opposition 7-1 on Friday night and 3-1 on Saturday night the Aeros close out the regular season with an unprecedented record of twenty three wins, zero losses, and one tie. Incredibly, this is the second year in row that the Midget Aeros have gone undefeated in the regular season.

The Dolphins had a great opportunity to play the spoiler role and they worked extremely hard in both games. But the Aeros proved to be too strong for the Etobicoke club who never stopped competing until the final buzzer of the second game. Multiple point efforts were turned in by Daniela Dal Colle (14), Kalley Armstrong (27), Adriana Leon (19), and Sally Butler (10), who scored her third natural hat trick of the year in game two. The Aeros played both games under the immense pressure of expectations that come with the territory. No one said it, but everyone was aware that the Aeros needed these last two wins to accomplish this rare feat. Everything seemed to click and mistakes were rare in these two games against Etobicoke. In outscoring their opposition a combined 10-2 they can now look forward to the challenges that lay ahead. Credit goes to every single player in this line up. Aeros Associate Coach Robin Sharpe was bench boss on Friday night due to the absence of Coaches Ralph Aiello and Lou Vedovat. Sharpe explained her teams sudden burst of offence. “That’s what we’ve been practicing, attacking. It was something that we needed to work on and that’s what we’re doing. Our goaltending this year has been great. Our goals against average is better than it’s ever been and our commitment to team defense also helps.” How did Coach Sharpe and the Aeros adjust to the absence of her partners behind the bench? “Normally our girls don’t adjust well to not having Coach Ralph behind the bench but they definitely stepped it up for me tonight. I felt very comfortable in the lead role as it is not the first time that I’ve had to call the shots. On the whole, we played very well.”

One of the reasons for the Aeros success has been the recent play of Aeros veteran Olivia Damiani who played particularly well in these two games against Etobicoke. Her usual aggressive fore-checking and commitment to defense was evident all weekend. Damiani was asked how she felt about being a part of two undefeated regular seasons. “It feels pretty good, it’s an accomplishment that not many teams can say they have experienced. After two years I think it has come down to determination and hard work, wanting it, I guess. Now we need to focus on what is possible and what we have ahead of us. Personally, I am trying to pick it up a notch, get my feet moving, and try to make good decisions all over the ice, especially in our own end.” Wise words from the Aeros forward who will be counted on heavily in the weeks to come.

Toronto’s final statistics in the standings of the LLFHL look impressive. They took 47 out of a possible 48 points and their plus 57 goals for/against ratio was second only to Durham West 31 who had a plus 70 rating. The Aeros also rank second only to Stoney Creek in the goals against category of the entire LLFHL. This current roster of players have truly gelled into a cohesive group that has to be considered one of the favorites heading into the LLFHL Playoffs, the Ontario Winter Games and the Provincial Playdowns.

Power Play clicks and Armstrong scores 2 in shutout win over Wildcats
With only three games left in the regular season the Toronto Aeros could easily fall into a lull as is bound to happen to most hockey teams at one point or another, but the Aeros obviously are not a typical team. After an emotional win less than 15 hours earlier it was back to business as usual for this skilled hockey club as they skated to a 4-0 victory over the Leaside Wildcats on Saturday morning at Baycrest Arena. With Head Coach Ralph Aiello on leave for a family commitment, it was up to associate coaches Robyn Sharpe and Lou Vedovat to take over the Aeros bench. The Aeros players did not disappoint the undefeated pair as they shut out the Wildcats for the second time this year.

It took a period for the Aeros to find their legs and they almost started the second frame down by a goal; however, Aeros goalie Danielle Bailey (30) came up with a huge save with less than 20 seconds on the first period clock. It was another shutout for Bailey, who continues to impress with every outing. The Aeros controlled the game effectively and moved the puck around the ice extremely well. The high tempo and aggresive forechecking led to three power play opportunities for the Aeros and they clicked twice. Both power play markers came off the sticks of defenceman Shannon Doyle (7) and Carolyn Luczak (26) with Ali Winkel (3) creating havoc in front of the Leaside net on both occasions. Kalley Armstrong (27) also netted a pair of even strength goals to contribute to the team’s 21st win of the regular season. Aeros forward Daniela Dalcolle (14), whose foot speed made life miserable for the Leaside defence all game, commented on the win. “We are moving the puck really well right now, especially on the power play and it showed on the scoreboard against Leaside today. We have been trying to send more pucks to the net with traffic in front.” The speedy forward was asked if the team felt tired after such an emotionally charged game last night. “Not at all” said Dalcolle, “we love all of the challenges that we face and games like the one last night bring us closer to our ultimate goal”.

Epic defensive battle results in 1-0 Aeros win
A highly anticipated meeting between these rival clubs was a low scoring affair that was truly a defensive battle and resulted in another victory for the Toronto side.

The game took awhile to get rolling as both teams took a very cautious attitude toward one another in the early going. The Aeros did more pressing and carried most of the play in the first two periods but the Etobicoke Dolphins kept low key, stayed out of the penalty box and waited patiently for an Aeros mistake. The mistake never came and the Aeros scraped their way to a close 1-0 win. The score could have been more lopsided had it not been for the strong play of the Dolphins goalie who kept her team in the game. The Aeros had most of the scoring chances throughout the game as reflected by the shots on goal. Etobicoke managed only 4 shots in the first two periods. The Aeros put up a wall defensively and young Carolyn Luczak (26) had her best game of the year for the Aeros.

The Aeros scored the lone goal of the game in the first period on a low-hard point shot by Madison Johnston (16) that was deflected into the net by Paulena Jakarsezian (11) who had battled her way to a good scoring position in front of the Dolphins netminder. Assisting on the goal was Ali Winkel (3).

The third period brought out the best in both teams as good defense and quality goaltending at both ends of the ice continued to rule the game. The Dolphins almost tied the game late in the third period when they found themselves on the power play with less than three minutes on the clock, but they could not solve the Aeros penalty kill system that was anchored by Aeros goalie Emily Ablamowitz (29). “We played a good game tonight” said Aeros defenseman Aurora Kennedy (9). “Despite the low score, we stayed very confident while remaining calm and focused.” The final three minutes of the game proved to be the most exciting and Kennedy explained the coaches’ message to the players. “The coach asked us to be careful when we iced the puck, he wanted us to keep control of the puck whenever we could.” The win pushes the Aeros record to 20-0-1 with 3 very important games left to play in the regular season and Kennedy feels that there is still a lot of work to be done. “Our coach wants us to focus on our specialty teams, especially our power play. It will be very important for us to keep our feet moving and continue to play with energy.”

The Aeros next see action tomorrow at Baycrest Arena, where they meet the Leaside Wildcats.

Toronto Midget Aeros 3 at Aurora Panthers 1

Panthers’ smart game and aggressive play keeps it close.
The Toronto Aeros won their 19th game of the regular season by defeating the Aurora Panthers 3-1 in Aurora on Sunday afternoon. It was the first time the Aeros had hit the ice in 5 days and they looked a little rusty in the early going. Meanwhile the Aurora team continually forced the Aeros into a dump and chase game by challenging the Aeros forwards at the blue line on every opportunity.

It took a while for the Aeros to get rolling and once they started to fore-check more aggressively the opportunities started to appear. A scramble in front of the Panthers’ net resulted in the first Aeros goal with 7 minutes to go in the second period. Kalley Armstrong (27) poked the puck in, assisted by Clare Padmore (17) and Sally Butler (10).

With fresh ice to start the third period Aurora continued to force the Aeros into dumping the puck, and the Panthers continued to keep it simple by working extremely hard. They played a smart and physical game and were rewarded with the tying goal less than a minute into the third period. It was more of the same back-and-forth for most of the third period as the tight checking, physical style dominated the action. The Aeros broke the tie 5 minutes into third when Sally Butler (10) made a good decision by sending the puck to the net into a big crowd of players. The ensuing battle in front of the Aurora net culminated with the puck barely squeezing into the net just as it was knocked off its mooring. The referee could have called it either way, and no doubt he wished he had the advantage of instant replay to help him make the call, but the call went in the Aeros’ favour. Butler received credit for the goal, with Paulena Jakarsezian (11) and Adriana Leon (19) assisting. The Panthers’ goalie was shaken up in the pile-up, and ten seconds later the Aeros would bag an insurance goal. Kalley Armstrong (27) picked up a puck from Daniela Dal Colle (14) and roofed a top cheeser past the un-warmed-up Panthers’ goalie. A curfew called with 4:27 remaining on the clock left a sour taste in the mouths of the fans in this otherwise exciting game. The last 4 minutes of this game would surely have been intense.

Aeros defenseman Shannon Doyle (7), who played one of her best games of the year remarked “we had a bit of a slow start today because we haven’t been on the ice since last Tuesday, but we definitely stepped it up in third period and we proved why we are such a good team”. When asked what the Aeros coaches are looking for as the regular season winds down, Doyle replied “Coach Aiello says we need to improve our power play and special teams. He is also asking us to communicate more during the game”. Asked if she felt any pressure playing against her former team, Doyle responded “I just wanted have a good game and contribute to the team concept as much as possible. Our goal is to win every game as it comes and we will be successful”.

Aeros do not see action until Wednesday, February 6th, when they play Etobicoke 434 at Albion.

Butler’s hat-trick paces Aeros in win over Aurora Panthers
The Toronto Aeros won their 18th game of the regular season by defeating the Aurora Panthers 4-1 on home ice at John Booth Arena on Friday night. The Aeros opened the scoring 17 seconds into the first period with a goal that surprised everyone including Sally Butler (10), who made a nice play at the side of the net and was given credit for the goal, with Daniela Dal Colle (14) assisting. The highlight reel play of the night was undoubtedly on Butler’s second goal of the game. She picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and used her speed to beat the defender to the wide side, where she unleashed a perfect wrist shot into the top right-hand corner of the net.

The Aeros used their quick line changes to keep the Panthers on their heels and whether on the PP, PK or even strength, the lengths of their shifts seem to be half of the length of their opponents. Fresh legs on the ice directly led to the Aeros third goal as Toronto caught Aurora in their own zone, with the Aurora bench at the far end of the ice. The Aeros were able to change lines and retain control of the puck, capitalizing on a weary Panthers defense as Adriana Leon (19) set up Sally Butler (10) for her second natural hat-trick of the season.

It was an excellent overall effort considering the loss of two Aeros forwards. The injuries forced defenseman Madison Johnston (16) up to the forward’s ranks. “If anyone can do it Johnny can” replied associate coach Robyn Sharpe after the game. “She is a smart player and very composed on the ice which makes it easy for her to make the transition from defense to forward”. And Johnston (16) bagged an assist with Aurora Kennedy (9) on the Aeros fourth goal of the game, scored by Daniela DalColle (14).

Coach Sharpe was asked what it was that impressed her the most about this victory. “Our girls communicated better than I have witnessed at any point of this season. They have no trouble connecting with one another in the dressing room but sometimes when they hit the ice they forget that communication is a huge part of the game. These games are very important to our building process so that we will be playing our best hockey when it means the most”, Coach Sharpe said. “We like to keep short shifts to keep fresh legs on the ice at all times and it helps us to set the tone and pace of most games that we play. It was one of the best games that we have played all year”.

Next weekend, the Aeros play a home-and home series against a strong Buffalo Bisons club, who have been playing at the U-19 level all year. It should be some of the toughest competition the Aeros have faced to date this year.

Aeros overcome penalty-fest and ailing Dolphins
The Toronto Aeros matched their highest offensive output of the season by lighting the lamp 5 times against the Etobicoke 428 Dolphins at Albion Arena on Wednesday night. Goals by Sally Butler (10), Madison Johnston (16), Clare Padmore (17), Daniela DalColle (14), and Kalley Armstrong (27) pushed the Aeros season record to 17-0-1.

The Dolphins were unfortunately missing three players, and Dolphins’ goalie Laura Proietto (29) played two periods despite being in recovery from a recent surgery. The Dolphins did not roll over easily despite their thinned ranks, but the Aeros hit their stride early in the first period and didn’t look back.

The Aeros now sit comfortably in 1st place of the North Central Division with 35 points and with this victory have clinched the top spot in the division. It was the fourth time this season that the Aeros have scored 5 goals against an opponent and they are second only to Durham West in the entire LLFHL in the “Goals For” category with 61 GF compared to Durham’s 76 tallies. Potent offence and excellent defense were the order of the day for the Aeros who proved that a strong work ethic is required every time the puck drops. It was a penalty filled game which took away from the natural flow of the Aeros line combinations and the quick changes that we are accustomed to seeing. Special teams played a big role in the victory and as the games get more important, the power play and penalty kill units will play a significant role. Head Coach Ralph Aiello was asked if he had any special or different preparation for his team leading up to this game against the Dolphins. “Our focal point was to take care of our own business and do what we needed to do on the ice. We prepared the same way we would prepare for any other team.”

When asked for his overall impression of the game coach Aiello replied “We had a lot of penalties to kill. The middle part of the game was our strongest and we had to overcome the loss of two very important players for the entire third period. Overall it was a strong effort.”

Aeros scoring:

1st period 3:07 Sally Butler (10)

Redwings put up a tough fight but Johnston gets the insurance goal for the win
The Toronto Aeros made the most of their opportunities and hustled their way to a 3-1 victory over the always tough Willowdale Red Wings on Saturday night at Seneca College. The defensively responsible Red Wings limited the Aeros attack to only two goals until an empty netter by Madison Johnston (16) put the game away late in the third period.

“This Red Wings team always play their best against us” forward Kalley Armstrong (27) said after the game. “The last time we played them, the score was 2-1 so I knew that we had to be prepared”. This closely fought game was well played by both teams and great goaltending at both ends of the ice contributed to the low score. The strong teamwork of the Aeros players was instrumental in their victory as this game surely could have gone either way. The Aeros will need that commitment to teamwork and effort as their schedule doesn’t get any easier from here. They still have 2 games remaining against the second place Etobicoke Dolphins in what will no doubt be spirited games.

Aeros scoring:
2nd period 6:05 Kalley Armstrong (27) from Sally Butler (10)

Toronto Midget Aeros 4 at Mississauga Chiefs 2

Paulena Jakarsezian scores 2 to lift Aeros over Chiefs
Coming off their trip to the Connecticut Polar Bears Tournament, the Toronto Aeros visited the 6-7-3 Mississauga Chiefs on Friday night. The Aeros continued their unbeaten streak with a 4-2 win at the Hershey Center. In doing so, the Aeros run their record to 16-0-1 with 8 games left in the schedule.

Tenacious forechecking, strong defensive efforts and quality goaltending were needed against a Mississauga squad that plays a better game than their record indicates. The Chiefs are a hard working team that never gives up. It was touch and go for the Aeros right from the opening face-off to the third period when the Chiefs made it close by coming back 3-2 before an empty netter put the game away.

The Aeros hit the gamesheet first off a beautiful Sally Butler (10) pass from behind the net to Paulena Jakarsezian (11) after a near miss by Daniela Dalcolle (14). Mississauga almost tied the game in the first but the Aeros’ Danielle Bailey (30) made a great toe save.

The Aeros went up 2-0 midway thru the second period on a nice point shot thru traffic by Shannon Doyle (7) that was deflected by Dalcolle. Kalley Armstrong (27) was credited with an assist. Mississauga got one back to make it 2-1 until a clean faceoff win by Butler (10) to Adriana Leon (19) made it 3-1, with Jakarsezian assisting.

It appeared that the Aeros were in control of this game until Mississauga came within 1 halfway through the third period. But, with the Chiefs’ goalie out of the net for the extra attacker, Butler poked the puck to Jakarsezian again for the insurance marker. The Aeros came out of the game with a 4-2 win and look forward to facing the always tough Willowdale Red Wings on Saturday night.
